Sesame Oil
Sesame oil can be introduced around 6 months, as part of introducing common allergens early and safely. It offers healthy fats and a distinctive, nutty flavor to foods.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Drizzle a tiny amount over purees, soft vegetables, or oatmeal. 9-12 months: Use to lightly sauté soft finger foods or mix into baby-friendly stir-fries. 12+ months: Can be used as a dressing ingredient for salads or a flavoring in various cooked dishes.
Nutrition
Provides healthy unsaturated fats, beneficial for brain development and energy production for your growing baby. It also contains vitamin E, an antioxidant that supports cell health, and some anti-inflammatory compounds.
A note from the editors
Use toasted sesame oil for a more intense flavor, but always in very small quantities due to its potency and strong taste.
Good to know
Sesame is a common allergen. Introduce a tiny amount on its own first, then watch for any signs of an allergic reaction such as hives, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Consult your pediatrician with any concerns.
