Soy Sauce

Soy sauce should be introduced from 12 months due to its high sodium content. It's a common condiment that can add umami flavor, but should be used very sparingly for babies.

How to serve at this age

12+ months: Offer in tiny, tiny amounts, such as a drop or two diluted into a sauce or marinade. Remember, babies need very little sodium.

Nutrition

Soy sauce primarily provides sodium, which babies need in very small amounts. It does not offer significant beneficial nutrients for a baby's growth and development.

A note from the editors

Always opt for a low-sodium version of soy sauce if available, but even then, use it in minimal quantities.

Good to know

Soy is a common allergen. Introduce soy sauce on its own (diluted) and watch for reactions before combining with other new foods. Due to its high sodium content, it should be used very sparingly.
