Spelt can be introduced around 6 months. It's an ancient grain related to wheat with a slightly nutty flavor.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cook spelt berries until very soft and mash. 9-12 months: Serve soft spelt as part of grain dishes. 12-24 months: Use spelt flour in baking or serve berries.
Nutrition
Good source of fiber, protein, and B vitamins. Contains iron, manganese, and zinc. Higher in protein than regular wheat.
A note from the editors
Spelt berries take about an hour to cook. Soak overnight to reduce cooking time.
Good to know
Contains gluten - not suitable for celiac disease. Some people with wheat sensitivity tolerate spelt better.
