Food guide
Farro
Farro is an ancient grain that provides a delightful, chewy texture once cooked thoroughly, making it an excellent introduction to complex textures. It is suitable from 6 months once your baby has started other grains, provided it is cooked until very soft to ensure easy digestion.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cook until very soft and serve as a mash or mixed into purees. 9-12 months: Offer as soft-cooked, tender grains mixed into yogurt or soft veggie mashes. 12+ months: Serve as a base for grain salads or mixed dishes, ensuring the texture remains manageable.
Nutrition
Farro is a nutritional powerhouse, rich in complex carbohydrates for sustained energy and dietary fiber to promote healthy digestion. It is also a good source of protein, which is essential for your baby's rapid growth and development. Additionally, it provides iron and B vitamins, supporting overall brain and nerve health.
A note from the editors
Soak the farro overnight before cooking to significantly reduce cooking time and improve digestibility for your baby's sensitive tummy.
Good to know
Farro contains gluten, so it is important to watch for any adverse reactions when introducing it. Always cook farro until it is soft and tender, and consider blending it into a porridge consistency if your baby struggles with grains initially.
