Flounder

Flounder is a mild, flaky white fish that is perfect for baby-led weaning starting at 6 months. It is an excellent choice for a first fish because of its delicate texture and low mercury content.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Steam or bake until cooked through and offer as a large, flaked piece free of bones. 9-12 months: Serve as bite-sized, flaked pieces that baby can easily pick up. 12+ months: Offer as a flakey fillet or mixed into finger-food fish cakes.

Nutrition

Flounder provides high-quality protein necessary for building muscle and tissue in your growing baby. It is also rich in Vitamin B12, which supports healthy brain and nerve function. Being a low-fat fish, it is very easy on the digestive system.

A note from the editors

Flounder pairs beautifully with fresh lemon juice and dill, which can help introduce your baby to subtle, fresh herbs early on.

Good to know

Fish is a common allergen, so monitor for any signs of rash or digestive distress during the first few exposures. Most importantly, ensure you inspect the fish carefully to remove any stray pin bones before serving.
