Food guide
Tilapia
Tilapia is a mild, white fish that serves as a gentle introduction to seafood for babies starting solids. Its flaky texture and subtle flavor make it easily acceptable for little palates just beginning their food journey.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Offer as a large, deboned flaked piece or a finger-length strip. 9-12 months: Serve flaked into smaller, manageable pieces mixed with vegetables. 12+ months: Serve as a fish cake or in small, bite-sized portions.
Nutrition
This fish is an excellent source of lean protein and essential B-vitamins, which support energy metabolism. It provides a modest amount of healthy fats necessary for brain development. Additionally, it is a low-mercury option, making it a safe choice for frequent consumption.
A note from the editors
Poach the tilapia in breast milk or broth to add moisture and extra flavor without adding salt.
Good to know
Like all fish, tilapia is a common allergen, so introduce it in small amounts early on. Be extremely diligent about checking for and removing all small bones before serving.
