Tortilla
Tortillas, especially corn or wheat varieties, can be introduced from 6 months. They offer a soft, pliable base for various toppings and help introduce grains.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cut into strips or offer a small piece for baby to gum. Ensure it's soft enough to tear easily. You can spread a thin layer of avocado or hummus on it. 9-12 months: Serve as small, soft pieces or strips with dips, or as a component of a deconstructed taco or quesadilla. 12+ months: Offer small quesadilla wedges, soft taco fillings, or strips for dipping.
Nutrition
Provides carbohydrates for energy, and some fiber depending on whether it's whole wheat or whole corn. Fortified tortillas may also contain iron and B vitamins.
A note from the editors
Warm tortillas slightly to make them softer and easier for baby to manage. Avoid overly crisp or hard taco shells.
Good to know
Wheat and sometimes corn can be allergens. Introduce plain tortilla first and watch for reactions. Always ensure tortillas are soft and pliable, not crispy or brittle, to reduce choking risk.
