Buckwheat
Buckwheat can be introduced around 6 months. Despite its name, buckwheat is not related to wheat and is naturally gluten-free.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Cook buckwheat groats until very soft and mash or puree. 9-12 months: Serve soft cooked buckwheat as finger food. 12-24 months: Use in pancakes, porridge, or grain bowls.
Nutrition
Complete protein with all essential amino acids. Rich in fiber, magnesium, and antioxidants. Good source of B vitamins.
A note from the editors
Toast buckwheat groats before cooking for a nuttier flavor. Buckwheat flour makes excellent pancakes.
Good to know
Buckwheat is gluten-free but may be processed in facilities with gluten grains. Has a nutty flavor that some babies love.
