Date Paste — baby-led weaning recipe served for a 18-month-old baby

Ingredients

  • 10 Medjool dates, pits removed
  • ¼ cup warm water (for soaking)
  • 2–3 tbsp soaking liquid (reserved, for blending)

Method

  1. 01

    Remove the pits from 10 Medjool dates and place the date flesh in a small bowl.

  2. 02

    Cover the dates with warm water and soak for 10 minutes to soften (or use water that has just come off the boil).

  3. 03

    Drain the dates, reserving the soaking liquid.

  4. 04

    Place the soaked dates in a blender or food processor with 2–3 tablespoons of the soaking liquid.

    Blend until a completely smooth, thick paste forms. Add more liquid one teaspoon at a time to adjust consistency.

How to offer

Use as a natural sweetener in oatmeal, smoothies, or baked goods for toddlers 18 months+. Dates are very high in natural sugars — use sparingly.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. Freeze in small portions for up to 3 months.
