Coconut
Coconut can be introduced around 6 months in age-appropriate forms. Coconut is technically a fruit, not a tree nut.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Use coconut oil in cooking or add coconut cream to purees. 9-12 months: Include finely shredded coconut in baked goods. 12-24 months: Use in various sweet and savory dishes.
Nutrition
Good source of healthy medium-chain fats. Contains fiber, iron, and manganese. Provides quick energy.
A note from the editors
Unsweetened coconut products are best for babies. Coconut cream adds richness to curries and purees.
Good to know
Despite the name, coconut allergy is separate from tree nut allergy but can occur. Shredded coconut can be a choking hazard.
