Amaranth

Amaranth is an ancient, gluten-free pseudo-cereal that is safe for babies starting around 6 months. Its tiny, porridge-like texture makes it an easy-to-digest early grain for developing digestive systems.

How to serve at this age

6-9 months: Cook into a soft, well-mashed porridge consistency using water or breast milk. 9-12 months: Offer as a thicker, scoopable porridge or mixed with mashed vegetables. 12+ months: Serve as a warm grain bowl mixed with diced fruits or shredded meats.

Nutrition

This nutrient-dense grain is an excellent plant-based source of protein, providing all nine essential amino acids. It is also rich in iron, magnesium, and phosphorus, which are vital for bone strength and blood health. The high fiber content helps promote healthy digestion and regular bowel movements.

A note from the editors

To improve nutrient absorption, toast the dry grains lightly before boiling, or soak them overnight to reduce phytic acid content.

Good to know

Always cook amaranth thoroughly with plenty of water until it reaches a soft, porridge-like consistency to avoid choking. While not a common allergen, treat it as a new food and watch for any reactions during initial exposure.
