Feeding guide · 10 months
Feeding your 10-month-old: family food and real texture
At ten months your baby is ready for real family food: soft meats, chewier grains and mixed dishes, all without added salt. Many babies also start to want a snack between meals as they get more active.
- Meals a day
- 3, plus 1–2 snacks
- Portion
- Appetite-led
- Milk
- 2–3 feeds, apart from meals
- Texture
- Soft family food, chopped
Texture at ten months
Your baby should be well past smooth purées and handling soft lumps and small finger foods comfortably. The target is food with the softness of ripe banana or well-cooked pasta. If you're still mostly on purées, start stepping up now; acceptance gets harder after 12 months.
Soft meats and chewier grains
Meat is an important source of iron and zinc. Try tender shredded chicken cooked in a sauce, flaked salmon, soft meatballs in tomato sauce, or mince stirred through pasta. For grains, soft pasta, strips of wholemeal toast and pearl barley in stews give real texture to work with. Avoid very dry, crumbly bread and crackers.
The thumb test
Press a piece of food between your thumb and finger. If it squashes easily with light pressure, it's the right texture. If it resists, springs back or is hard, cook it more or leave it for later.
Adding snacks
Snacks aren't treats at this age. They are small extra meals. Combine two food groups: banana with yogurt, toast with cream cheese, or soft fruit with cheese. Skip sweet puffs and crackers that are mostly refined carbohydrate.

- Snacks should combine two food groups.
Common questions
Should my 10-month-old still be eating purées?+
Mostly not. By ten months babies should be eating soft, chopped family food. Keeping babies on smooth purées too long is linked to texture aversion and fussier eating later.
Does my 10-month-old need snacks?+
Many do, especially active babies. One or two small snacks between meals, each combining two food groups, fit well alongside three meals and two or three milk feeds.
