Pork
Pork is an excellent early source of iron and protein for babies starting at 6 months of age. It is a savory, versatile meat that can easily be prepared to match your baby's developing chewing skills.
How to serve at this age
6-9 months: Offer as a slow-cooked, shredded, or minced meat, or formed into soft, easy-to-hold meatballs. 9-12 months: Serve as thin, tender strips or bite-sized cubes that the baby can pick up with a pincer grasp. 12+ months: Serve in small, manageable pieces or as part of family meals like casseroles or stews.
Nutrition
Pork is packed with high-quality protein necessary for muscle growth and repair. It is a fantastic source of heme iron, which is the most easily absorbed form of iron, crucial for preventing anemia and supporting cognitive function.
A note from the editors
Slow cooking pork with mild herbs like rosemary or sage creates a soft texture that is much easier for new eaters to manage.
Good to know
Always ensure pork is cooked to an internal temperature of 145°F to ensure safety. Avoid processed pork products like bacon or ham, which are high in sodium and additives.
