Ingredients

  • 1 very ripe plantain (skin mostly black)
  • 1–2 tbsp breast milk, formula, or water (to thin)

Method

  1. 01

Choose a very ripe plantain — the skin should be mostly black, indicating peak sweetness.

  2. 02

Peel the plantain and cut into 1-inch rounds.

  3. 03

Place plantain rounds in a saucepan, cover with water, and boil over medium heat for 12–15 minutes until very tender.

  4. 04

Drain and transfer to a bowl.

  5. 05

Mash with a fork until smooth, adding 1–2 tablespoons of breast milk, formula, or water to reach desired consistency. Cool before serving.

How to offer

Serve on a soft spoon. Ripe plantain is naturally sweet and starchy — a great first food for introducing more complex carbohydrates.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Freeze in ice cube trays for up to 2 months.
