Feeding your 8-month-old: finger foods and the pincer grasp

Around eight months many babies start to pick things up between thumb and finger, an early version of the pincer grasp. That opens up smaller pieces of food and a lot more independence at the table. Most babies are now eating two meals a day and moving toward three.

The pincer grasp arrives

A rough pincer grip, thumb against the side of the finger, often shows up around 7 to 8 months, with the neat fingertip version closer to 9 or 10 months. Help it along with a few small, soft pieces on the tray at a time: cooked peas, small banana pieces, soft pasta shapes, diced steamed courgette. Expect more on the floor than in the mouth.

Shape matters more than size

Round foods can seal a baby's airway, so quarter grapes, cherry tomatoes, blueberries and olives lengthways. Cook hard vegetables and fruit (carrot, apple) until soft. The test is simple: if it doesn't squash between your thumb and finger with light pressure, it isn't ready for your baby.

Structuring the day

A realistic 8-month day is milk on waking, breakfast 30 to 60 minutes later, a nap, lunch, an afternoon milk feed, another nap, dinner and a bedtime milk feed. Offer solids when your baby is alert and not overly hungry. As they get more experienced, offering food before milk at one or two meals helps build appetite.

Keep up iron and allergens

Iron is still the nutrient to watch: include meat, fish, eggs, lentils or beans at least once or twice a day. If you have introduced allergens like egg, peanut and dairy, keep them in the rotation a few times a week. Regular exposure matters more than the first taste.

Common questions

How many meals should an 8-month-old have?+

Most 8-month-olds have two meals a day and are working toward three by nine months. Some take longer, which is fine. Portions are still small, a few tablespoons per meal.

What finger foods are safe for an 8-month-old?+

Anything soft enough to squash between your thumb and finger, cut into strips or small soft pieces. Avoid whole round foods (grapes, cherry tomatoes, whole nuts), hard raw vegetables and apple, and anything salty or sugary.
