Feeding your 7-month-old: more meals, more variety
By seven months most babies have a few weeks of solids behind them and are getting more confident: grabbing faster, chewing (with gums) more and swallowing more of what they pick up. This month is about building to two meals a day and widening the range of foods and flavours.

- 1–2

- A few tablespoons
- Milk

- Soft sticks, mashed with lumps
Build up to two meals
Most 7-month-olds eat one or two small meals a day. If one meal is going well, add a second at a time your baby is alert and happy, often late afternoon. Milk is still doing the heavy lifting on calories, so don't drop milk feeds to make room for food.
Variety is the goal
Babies are especially open to new flavours at this age. Aim for something new most days and keep re-offering foods that were refused: it can take a dozen tries before a baby accepts a new taste. Mild herbs and spices like cinnamon, cumin and garlic are welcome; salt and sugar are not.
Start moving through textures
If you started with smooth purées, now is the time to add texture: a few soft lumps stirred into a familiar mash, then mostly mashed food with soft pieces. Babies who stay on smooth food too long are more likely to resist lumps later. Gagging and funny faces when textures change are normal.
Balance across the day
Think in three groups rather than calories: protein (meat, fish, eggs, lentils, beans, full-fat yogurt), carbohydrates (pasta, potato, oats, toast) and healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, oily fish, egg yolk). You don't need all three at every meal, just across the day.

Recipes for 7-month-olds
Key takeaways
- One to two small meals a day; keep every milk feed.
- Offer something new most days and re-offer refused foods.
- Add lumps and soft pieces if you started on purées.
- Balance protein, carbs and fats across the day, not every meal.
Common questions
How much should a 7-month-old eat?+
A few tablespoons per meal, one to two meals a day, is typical. Appetite varies a lot day to day. Follow your baby's cues and let them stop when they turn away.
My 7-month-old gags a lot. Is that normal?+
Yes. Gagging is a loud, protective reflex and is common while babies learn new textures. It usually settles as they get more practice. Choking is different: it's silent and needs first aid immediately.
